Virginia Beach is mourning the loss of two young police officers, Cameron Girvin and Christopher Reese, who were brutally gunned down during a routine late-night traffic stop.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, raising serious concerns about officer safety and violent crime.
A Routine Traffic Stop Turns Deadly
The tragic events unfolded late Friday night when Officers Girvin, 25, and Reese, 30, pulled over a vehicle for an expired license plate near Lynnhaven Parkway and Wendfield Drive.
According to Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate, the driver, later identified as convicted felon John McCoy III, was immediately hostile and refused to comply with police orders.
What started as a routine stop quickly escalated into a deadly confrontation.
As the officers attempted to handle the situation, McCoy pulled a firearm from his pocket and opened fire, striking both officers.
‘Defenseless’ Officers Shot a Second Time
In a chilling detail revealed by Chief Neudigate, McCoy didn’t stop at shooting the officers once. As Girvin and Reese lay on the ground, defenseless, McCoy shot each of them again.
Both officers were rushed to the hospital but succumbed to their injuries, marking one of the darkest days for the Virginia Beach Police Department.
The Hunt for the Suspect Ends in Suicide
Following the fatal shooting, police launched an urgent manhunt for McCoy.
Less than an hour later, officers found him in a shed behind the nearby apartment complex with a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
While officials continue to investigate, it is believed McCoy may have acted out of fear of being caught with a firearm—a serious offense for a convicted felon.
A Devastated Police Force and Community
Chief Neudigate did not hold back in expressing his grief:
“We’re all hurting. We lost two incredible officers who had promising futures ahead of them. Evil found them last night.”
The Virginia Beach Police Department immediately implemented a double-patrol system, ensuring no officer is alone on duty as they process this tragedy.
Remembering the Fallen Heroes
Both officers had been with the department since 2020 and were known for their dedication and integrity. Reese had also served as a deputy sheriff with the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office before joining the police force.
Virginia Beach Mayor Bobby Dyer issued a heartfelt statement:
“Their dedication to protecting our community will never be forgotten. We mourn their loss and stand with their families in this time of sorrow.”

The Virginia Beach shooting highlights the unpredictable dangers that law enforcement officers face daily. As the community mourns, questions remain about how to prevent such tragedies in the future.
